// Awareness Film

The War Widows Association of Great Britain approached RAW in need of a short, engaging promo to help raise awareness of their organisation – with the aim of challenging the stereotype that widows of conflict are elderly women from the WWII generation. They were keen for this to revolve around an interview with Victoria, a young widow they work with – our challenge was to use a standard ‘case study’ approach to make a deeper point.

Approach

To meet this challenge we filmed Victoria’s story using  ambiguous imagery, never fully revealing whom it was we were talking to – the goal being to play to the viewer’s assumptions that a woman talking about losing her husband in the war would be an older lady. The first part of the interview with Victoria was then dubbed over by an elderly actress and the ‘reveal’ made with a motion portrait and vocal transition.

Results

War Widows now have a beautifully shot video driven by the emotive narrative of a young woman losing her husband, but with a lasting challenge made to public assumptions about the charity and those widowed by conflict.
