// Video Production for Nokia from 1000ft!
The star of the show was esteemed aerial photographer Jason Hawkes, who swapped his usual DSLR camera kit for a single Nokia N8 camera phone to test it’s ability in capturing highly detailed scenes from the air.
Flying all over the UK in a Twin Squirrel helicopter – from Lands End to Birmingham, Manchester to Glasgow and Edinburgh and down the east cost via Newcastle, Norfolk and Cambridge – the N8 captured amazing rural landscapes, urban sprawls and unusual structures of the UK.
Our mission was to produce a series of short video diaries showcasing the most interesting areas and landscapes Jason photographed throughout the 2000-mile journey. Definitely one of our most interesting video production assignments to date!
My main camera of choice for this assignment was the Panasonic HVX201 – a solid HD P2 workhorse which is compact enough to hand hold all day yet able to deliver great looking HD video production and cope with a mixed bag of audio inputs.
Also in the kitbag was two GoPro HD cameras which proved invaluable when capturing footage looking out of the helicopter door from Jason’s head-cam angle (which proved to be the steadiest mounting!) and shooting day-long time-lapses from the cabin.
Another fascinating tool I used throughout the trip was the excellent MotionX iPhone application from Fullpower Technologies in the US. This 59p app enabled me to constantly track our location, speed and altitude throughout the trip. Once this data was exported to Google Earth I was able to replay the entire trip in 3D – very useful for looking back over where we visited and finding out the names of landmarks!
